Apple Watch

Marvelist has a companion Apple Watch app, so you can check off tasks and glance at your day from your wrist.

It installs alongside the iPhone app. You get your lists, the tasks and notes inside them, and the ability to tick things off or add a task.

It is deliberately not the whole app. Organising lists, planning events and running Focus plans are better on a phone or in a browser.

The watch is not a mirror of your phone. It has its own connection to Marvelist and fetches your lists from the server directly, so a task you tick on your wrist is sent straight to your account rather than queued for the phone to pass on.

What that means in practice:

  • The watch needs its own internet connection, over Wi-Fi or its own mobile data. Being near your phone is not what makes it work.
  • Your phone can be off, or elsewhere, and the watch still works so long as it is online.
  • A watch that is online but out of date is a refresh problem rather than a proximity problem. Opening the app again is the fix, not walking back to your phone.

Your phone does matter for one thing: signing in. The watch app picks up your sign-in from the iPhone app rather than asking you to type credentials on a watch screen, so install and sign in on the phone first.

Two, both for the rich watch-face slots:

Complication Shows Slots
Today Today’s tasks Corner, circular and rectangular
Smart Lists Your smart list counts Rectangular

Add one the usual way: edit the watch face, choose a complication slot, and pick Marvelist. Today is the more useful of the two on a face you actually look at, because it fits the small circular and corner slots as well as the rectangular one.

Check it is online first, since that is what it needs rather than your phone. A watch with no Wi-Fi and no mobile data of its own cannot reach Marvelist, however close the phone is.

If it is online and still stale, reopening the app fetches everything again. If it has signed itself out, open Marvelist on your iPhone once and the watch picks the sign-in back up.
