PrivPass Password Manager

Contributors

PrivPass is an iOS password manager. It stores passwords, payment cards and one-time-code tokens, encrypts the secret parts with AES-GCM, syncs across your devices through your own iCloud account, and fills credentials through the iOS AutoFill system.

The security model is documented in detail, including the parts that are weaker than a modern password manager should be. Two things in particular are worth knowing before you rely on PrivPass for anything important:

  • The key is derived from your master password with a single HMAC-SHA256 operation rather than a slow password hashing function, which offers little resistance to an offline guessing attack.
  • Only the secret values are encrypted. Item names, usernames, website addresses and notes are stored and synced in plain text.

Neither is a reason to panic if you are using it today, and both are reasons not to adopt it now. Limitations explains what each one means in practice.
